For the Love of Lake Okeechobee

Founder Steve Edmonds grew up in Florida. His love of the beautiful springs and lakes of his childhood carried the vision of Hemp4Water® for more than 3 decades. He wants to leave a legacy of clean waterways for future generations to enjoy. His passion for the restoration of Lake Okeechobee has fueled the drive to develop a cost-effective, all-natural way to bring the ecosystem back to balance. When his research led to hemp, his advocacy began. Hemps association with cannabis created hurdles other solutions do not face. The 2014 Hemp Research Bill allowed Hemp4Water® to prove the hypothesis in the lab and measure results in real world test settings.

Let's Grow Together

Since the authorization of the Hemp Research Bill Hemp4Water® has worked with a volunteer team to prove hemp cleans water better than other options. Our work adapting plants to clean fresh water is far from over. We can build upon our current successes. We need to expand our human and financial assets to combat the damage to our waterways every day. Hemp4Water® has proven that with a known daily load of nutrients being introduced to a body of fresh water, we can calculate the resources needed to restore homeostasis to your waterways.

Key Partnerships

Hemp4Water® is a 501C3 tax-deductible organization. We’ve created strategic partnerships to help us with research and development, legislative support, marketing, and personnel management.

It's an Idea that Works

Hemp4Water® is ready to scale & we'd like to clean your water.

Learning to bring homeostasis back to our waterways.

Growing plants in Florida is no easy task. Researching a quasi-illegal plant is no easy task! Changing the law to support hemp research is no easy task. Proving that hemp is the best candidate for bio-remediation was priceless.

Hemp4Water® has endured the test of time, and overcome all the obstacles. Now we have a product ready to clean water bodies at scale.

It wasn’t easy. The real work started once we successfully lobbied for the 2014 Florida Hemp Research Bill, in collaboration with the federal Farm Bill!

State law requires research to be done by a state college. We found a great partner in South Florida State College. Dr. Kate Calvin immersed herself in the project. Her lab tackled the hurdle of developing tests and protocols for measuring success. Thanks to Dr. Calvin, we can now measure the uptake of phosphate and nitrates by the hemp plants.

Hemp is not a water plant. It is a natural remediator. Teams worked in the lab and with small Florida hemp farms to weatherize hemp plants and adapt varieties to thrive with wet feet. Failure hones the process, after many generations of cultivars, adaptations of the growing medium, and few critters sunning on growing mats, the team learned, modified, and persevered.

Today we have quantifiable data supporting our process for restoring the natural balance of phosphates and nitrates in our water without chemicals and at a fraction of the cost.
